The SAEON Graduate Student Network is going from strength to strength.

The Interim Committee members met at the CSIR in Durban on 7 July 2006. High on the agenda was the 2nd Workshop to be held at Skukuza, Kruger National Park from 31 October to 2 November 2006.

Workshop in the Bush

The workshop is set to be three intensive but fun-filled days in the bush. A whole number of educational activities is planned, including invited speakers and field trips to different areas in and around the Park, as well as a day designated for student presentations.

This offers young scientists an excellent opportunity to gain valuable experience in giving talks and receiving feedback. The emphasis will be on networking, so there will be plenty of opportunity for students and speakers to socialise.

International SAEON Student Symposium 2007

An International SAEON Student Symposium is in the pipeline for 2007, with Cape Town as the probable venue. This will be a big event, drawing international and local students in Earth observation science, as well as some top plenary speakers in South African science.

Keep your eyes open for developments.

Students required for student committee

The Interim Committee (IC) of the GSN has decided to recruit two to four student members for training so that the IC can be taken over smoothly next year around the first GSN International SAEON Student Symposium when the current IC term expires.

We are therefore inviting nominations for TWO to FOUR student members who would be willing to become part of the GSN Committee. Because GSN members do not know each other well enough yet, we ask that you nominate YOURSELF ONLY. Do not nominate anyone else. To help you decide if you would like to become part of the GSN committee, the following qualities and skills are required:

  • independent thinking
  • disciplined
  • excellent team worker
  • organised
  • have spare time to dedicate to the GSN Committee
  • voluntary (i.e. no pay)
  • the position would be for TWO years, although it isn't a requirement that you are a student for the full two years. (The two-year position is imperative so that GSN activities and plans are carried out successfully!)

The current IC members have had a great deal of fun, and we've all learnt so much with regard to writing proposals, compiling budgets, planning activities, having meetings, and giving talks. So it's a steep learning curve, and one that will come in handy for your future career. To find out more about what the GSN Committee should strive towards, please read the constitution document on the GSN website (www.saeon.ac.za/students).

If you feel you are ready for the challenge, then please send us a short CV as well as a motivation for why you think you would like to serve on the Committee. Email your application to Silvia Mecenero (smecener@adu.uct.ac.za).

Details of the candidates will be placed on the GSN website, where every member of the GSN will be able to vote for one of them later in the year.

We look forward to receiving your applications!
