SAEON in the Media
Over the past three months SAEON featured prominently in a wide range of media.
A major highlight that drew considerable attention to SAEON and its operations from a national and international Earth observation audience was the launch of the SAEON Egagasini Node for Marine-Offshore Systems at the Intergovernmental Group on Earth Observations’ Ministerial Summit which was held in Cape Town in November last year.
Profiles on SAEON and SAEON’s contribution to global environmental observation science appeared in two publications of the Intergovernmental Group on Earth Observations – The Full Picture (a glossy coffee table publication on Earth observation science) and 100 Steps to GEOSS (which focuses on advances made in environmental observation towards a global environmental observation system of systems).
A joint media statement was issued with the Department of Science and Technology for the launch of the South African Earth Observation Strategy (SAEOS) and the SAEON Egagasini Node for Marine-Offshore Systems, which, together with one-on-one interviews organised for the launch of the Node, led to media coverage in several publications including Die Burger, Die Volksblad, Africa Geographic, Engineering News and online media such as Media 24, BuaNews Online and www.southafrica.info.
Two radio interviews were held with Johan Pauw, Head of SAEON and Dr Juliet Hermes, Manager of the SAEON Egagasini Node to coincide with the launch of the Node.
In addition, SAEON gave input into an article written by DST on Earth observation that was published in Sawubona, the in-flight publication of South African Airways.
SAEON issue of the South African Journal of Science
The proceedings of the first SAEON Summit were collated and published in a dedicated issue of the South African Journal of Science.
The publication was distributed at the Intergovernmental Group on Earth Observations’ Ministerial Summit to a national and international audience consisting of leading scientists and decision-makers in the field of environmental and observation science.
The publication was also distributed at the joint launch of the SAEON Egagasini Node and the South African Earth Observation Strategy. Additional copies were ordered to be distributed to other SAEON stakeholders, partners and associates.
