“The gold medal is not only mine, but also belongs to all the people who supported me through the years. To all youngsters who entered the competition but did not win — please be aware that the Science Expo is not only about winning but about the experience and knowledge you gain in the process. I wish that – through winning - I could inspire every young South African to become more involved in science, as it is our future. I urge every learner in SA to make full use of every opportunity that comes their way to take them to the greatest heights.” - Pharida Machaka

In June next year Pharidah Machaka of Phalaborwa will travel to Reunion Island to represent South Africa at the 2010 International Expo for Young Scientists.

Pharida’s project on Lupus Erythematosus that she entered into the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists won medals at local and regional level before competing with about 600 top projects in the national finals held at the University of Pretoria in October this year.

Pharida, a learner from Motome Malatji High School in the rural village of Maseke in Phalaborwa, is one of the 2009 SAEON Advenviro Kids’  top learners. She was the co-author of the 2009 Advenviro Kids report.
