Dr Juliet Hermes appointed to SANCOR Steering Committee

Dr Juliet Hermes, Manager of SAEON’s Egagasini Node for Marine Offshore Systems, will join the Steering Committee of the South African Network for Coastal and Oceanic Research (SANCOR) as Western Cape representative.
Dr Hermes describes SANCOR as an excellent organisation which has made a huge difference in the dissemination of marine science information, promoting communications between marine scientists of different disciplines, as well as encouraging students and young scientists.
“I endeavour to promote all opportunities I am made aware of through SANCOR and I'm excited to be involved in a more formal manner,” she says.
SANCOR is a non-statutory body that provides a forum for interaction, collaboration and communication about science in the marine and coastal environment. As the most influential marine science network in South Africa, it contributes to planning for future demands and generates and communicates knowledge and advice in order to promote the wise and informed use and management of marine and coastal resources and environments.
SANCOR’s activities are guided by the SANCOR Steering Committee which consists of 13 members appointed by each of the stakeholders, nominees of the National Forum and one representative of each Regional Forum. The Steering Committee:
- Ensures that the objectives of SANCOR are met
- Consults with the Forum
- Provides continuity, direction and leadership
- Assesses and reviews programmes and products
- Contributes to strategies
- Promotes the use of findings on marine resources
- Provides advice on priorities, gaps and funding
- Consults, informs and lobbies members
The organisational activities resulting from the Steering Committee are supported by the National Research Foundation (NRF) and the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA). DEA provides the operational financial resources and NRF the administrative support in the form of personnel.
