IT'S HERE! Graduate Student Indibano 2010

Due to the success of the 2008 Indibano which was held in De Hoop Nature Reserve in the Western Cape, SAEON’s Graduate Student Network decided that a subsequent Indibano should be held in 2010.

The Indibano - which will be held in Port Elizabeth from 22 - 26 March - provides a platform for graduate students with similar fields of interest to network and exchange ideas that will enrich their postgraduate experience. After all, it is not only ‘what you know’ but ‘who you know’ that can make all the difference in plotting a successful career.

Of course, because what you know is also important, the Indibano provides an opportunity for additional training that may not be covered in the course of an individual’s study. The 2008 Indibano ran a course on the statistical package, R, introduced delegates to the Cape Floral Kingdom and gave an opportunity to each delegate to present their own research.

The 2010 Indibano will continue the tradition with training in GIS usage with the computer programme, ARC View. In addition to showcasing the participating delegates’ research, a workshop will be held on how best to present research results. This is a great opportunity not only to hone your presentation skills, but also to get guidance from an expert who has seen you present and knows how best to guide you to get information across to a scientific audience.

Of particular excitement is the fact that we have decided to have the workshop in Port Elizabeth to overlap with the launch of the SAEON Elwandle Node. This presents an excellent opportunity for the GSN not only to interact with fellow members, but with academics and SAEON staff as well.
