SAEON represented at International Temperate Reefs Symposium
|
The year got off to an academic start in January, with my attendance of the 10th International Temperate Reefs Symposium in Perth, Australia.
The symposium brought together researchers from over 23 countries to share their work on temperate reef ecology, covering kelp and intertidal systems, reef fish and other reef associated species, as well as remote and optical studies.
During the symposium I presented my work examining settlement behaviour of mussel larvae on rocky shores and made the most of the opportunity to get up to date and interact with experts on the latest optical work being done in deeper environments using BRUV (Baited Remote Underwater Video) and towed benthic sled cameras similar to the system currently being used by SAEON’s Egagasini Node.
Travel to this invaluable symposium was made possible by the award of a Knowledge, Interchange and Collaboration (KIC) grant from the National Research Foundation together with Marine Research Grant (MARG III) funding from the Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association (WIOMSA) and the support of Professor McQuaid of the Coastal Research Group at Rhodes University.
