South African Environmental Observation Network (SAEON)
SAEON is an in situ Earth observation network,
sponsored by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and managed
by the National Research Foundation (NRF).
It establishes and maintains nodes (environmental observatories) linked by an information management network to serve as observation, research and education platforms for long-term studies of ecosystems. As such it provides for incremental advances in our understanding of ecosystems and our ability to detect, predict and react to environmental change.
Established in 2002, SAEON draws together environmental research and monitoring by government departments, science councils, universities, research institutes and industrial partners. The SAEON network of nodes plays a crucial role in long-term environmental monitoring and observation and in garnering information to inform climate change studies across the globe.
