- An ocean of opportunity at National Science Week, an article published in the October 2014 edition of GetSETgo, the online newsletter of the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA), mentions an outreach extravaganza conducted by Nozi Hambaze, Education Outreach Officer of SAEON’s Elwandle Node and Eddy Molekoa from the SA Marine Rehabilitation and Education Centre (SAMREC). The extravaganza, which formed part of National Science Week 2014, took place in the Sunday's River Valley and at Paterson, the Bornfree Foundation, Shamwari Game Reserve and Addo Community Hall, where learners were treated to science shows, educational theatre and presentations by young scientists.
- An article entitiled Introducing rural children to real and relevant environmental issues was published in the October 2014 edition of GetSETgo. The article describes how Professor Sue Milton (co-director of Renu-Karoo and SAEON research associate), Liesel Hein (SAEON intern), Ivy Bruintjies, Marai Isaacs and Mercia Loots (all of Renu-Karoo), guided 138 Grade 5 science learners through the local Prince Albert wastewater treatment works and the adjacent Wolwekraal Nature Reserve to learn about the water cycle and the effects of water on desert vegetation.
- SAEON supports WESSA in nurturing SA's budding scientists, another article published in the October 2014 edition of GetSETgo, highlights SAEON’s participation in the Youth Environmental Science Conference established by the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA).
