- An article currently appearing on the front page of the website of the University of the Witwatersrand, entitled Wits scientists debunk climate change myths, highlights the findings of research conducted by Jennifer Fitchett, a PhD student in the Wits School of Geography, Archaeology and Environmental Studies (GAES). Her research paper, co-authored with Professor Stefan Grab, Dr Dave Thompson (of SAEON) and Reza Rowshan (University of Golestan, Iran), titled Increasing frost risk associated with advanced citrus flowering dates in Kerman and Shiraz, Iran: 1960–2010, was published in the International Journal of Biometeorology in January 2014 and evolved out of work she did during her masters degree at Wits. The information was also published in various print and online news media, such as Polity. Jennifer was also interviewed on a number of radio stations, including SAFM and Classic FM.
- An article entitled Green warrior: Developing new science talent appeared on page 60 of the November/December 2013 edition of Maritime Review Africa. The article highlights the work of the Education Officer of SAEON’s Egagasini Node, Thomas Mtontsi.
- A profile on the SAEON Fynbos Node’s former Data Scientist, Victoria Goodall, entitled Driven by a passion for nature, appeared in the December 2013 edition of the SASA (South African Statistical Association) Newsletter. Victoria also co-authored an article entitled Workshop on Quantitative Methods in Landscape Ecology with a Focus on Sustainable Ecosystems, University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, South Africa in the October 2013 edition of ICIAM, the newsletter of the International Council for Industrial and Applied Mathematics.

The article is largely based on a presentation given by SAEON’s Chief Scientist, Professor William Bond, at the 20th Congress of the Association for the Taxonomic Study of the Flora of Tropical Africa (AETFAT) held at Stellenbosch University in January 2014. Professor Bond spoke about the forces that resulted in the formation of the African savannah vegetation in which early man evolved and the threat global warming posed for the persistence of this vegetation.
