A popular article on the elephant bird, co-authored by SAEON’s Chief Research Scientist, Prof. William Bond, was published in the June 2016 issue of Veld & Flora. Says William: “I always wanted to do honour to these extinct birds - we humans made them extinct. So this is my contribution.”

Farmer's Weekly of 18 March 2016 featured a cover story titled “Encroaching bush, grass threaten SA farming” written by Prof. William Bond, who is depicted in this cartoon by Dr Jack.

Position IT of April 2016 (print and online) featured an article by SAEON’s Nyasha Magadzire,“Integrating species distribution models and remote sensing”, as well as an article by Prof. Colin Everson, “New technology provides validation data for flood forecasting model”.
An article titled “Snapshot of a changing climate”, written by SAEON’s Chief Research Scientist, Prof. William Bond, was reprinted in the December 2015 edition of SAWMA Matters, the journal of the Southern African Wildlife Management Association.
A career profile of Dr Juliet Hermes, Manager of SAEON’s Egagasini Node, was published in Oceanography, the magazine of the Oceanography Society.
The March 2016 edition of Zigzag surfing magazine featured an article on the El Niño–Southern Oscillation, in which the oceanographic research done by SAEON, and Dr Juliet Hermes in particular, is mentioned.
The July 2016 edition of “Weg” magazine features an article on the Tankwa and Roggeveld penned by Dr Helga van der Merwe, Research Career Award Fellow at SAEON’s Arid Lands Node.
An article in which Thami Shezi, a botanical intern at SAEON’s Grasslands-Forests-Wetlands Node, reports on his experiences at the node, was published in the April 2016 edition of GetSETgo, the online newsletter of the South African Agency of Science and Technology Advancement.
An article titled “Internship programme - a win-win situation“ in the April 2016 edition of GetSETgo, describes the learning experiences of DST-NRF intern Kyle Cooper at SAEON’s Egagasini Node under the guidance of node manager Dr Juliet Hermes, who assisted and advised him on the projects that would challenge and grow his abilities.
In addition, a SAEON education outreach project received coverage in the April 2016 edition of GetSETgo: “Sharing best practices in bringing the oceans into the classroom” by Thomas Mtontsi and Ntombifikile Nxiba.
A SAEON eNews article by Joh Henschel, Kayleigh Muller and Tim O’Connor titled “Trees get frosty reception in Karoo” was circulated electronically to members of the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA).
