ARID LANDS NODE

The eagerly awaited Karoo Special Issue has been published in the African Journal of Range and Forage Science, managed by the Grassland Society of Southern Africa and published by NISC.

Titled Trajectories of Change in the Anthropocene, the idea behind this Special Issue came from worrying evidence that the Karoo, historically being mostly untouched by large developments, now faces many social and ecological challenges due to large-scale environmental changes. It became imperative to synthesise and further the current knowledge of the Karoo environment and its people, to prepare for future uncertainties.

SAEON was involved in the publication at many levels - as authors, as referees, as associate editors, as corresponding guest editor and as proofreaders.

ELWANDLE NODE

The following articles were published on the launch of the Shallow Marine and Coastal Research Infrastructure:

SAEON was mentioned in an article titled Bay celebrates National Marine Week, published in MyPE News Online on October 18.

SAEON was also mentioned in an article titled Understanding ocean canyons, published in Maritime Review Africa on September 1.

FYNBOS NODE

In a broadcast during the Sunrise programme on SAFm on October 31, Stephen Grootes engaged with Rayganah Rhoda, Community Fire Awareness Officer at Working on Fire, Dr Nicky Allsopp, Manager of the SAEON Fynbos Node and Dr Deon Terblanche, SA Weather Service, on the recent veld fires in George and Knysna.

Dr Allsopp is also cited in an article titled Restoring catchment areas the cheap water solution for Cape Town  published in Business Day and Business Live on November 5.

Nature Briefing of November 2 published an article, South Africa’s invasive species guzzle precious water and cost US$450 million a year by Sarah Wild, dealing mostly about SANBI's report on the state of invasive biodiversity in South Africa. The article mentions SAEON and Dr Jasper Slingsby, biodiversity scientist at SAEON’s Fynbos Node.

An article titled Stunning time-lapse images show how Cape Town's biggest dam has filled up, published in Business Insider on September 4, shows time-lapse images of the Theewaterskloof Dam coming back to life after the recent rains. The images were captured by Glenn Moncrieff, a data scientist at SAEON. Referring to this article, Star attractions, published in African Decisions on November 1, describes how Glenn used a network of tiny satellites to capture time-lapse images of the Theewaterskloof Dam swelling as water flowed into it. Theewaterskloof is the biggest dam in the Western Cape province.
