Call for abstracts and bottom-up initiatives: ILTER Open Science Meeting

The International LTER Network is pleased to announce its first global Open Science Meeting open to all experts involved in LTER, interested researchers and stakeholders. The meeting will be held in South Africa’s Kruger National Park from 9-13 October 2016.
Call for abstracts
The Science Committee of ILTER is inviting abstracts for platform and poster papers under the conference theme - Long-Term Ecosystem Research for sustainability under global changes: Findings and challenges of ILTER from local to global scales.
This is a unique opportunity to share your long-term research and time-series data with fellow LTER scientists from all over the world. The submission deadline for abstracts is 15 March 2016: 12:00 HRS : GMT.
Abstracts should be submitted by first registering on the system below and thereafter by submitting your abstract. Abstracts will be reviewed by the ILTER Science Committee and sorted into themes and sessions to be included in the programme. Successful authors will receive communications and announcements of the outcome of the review through this abstract submission system.

Call for bottom-up initiatives
ILTER is launching a two-stage call for research and development (R&D) ideas for LTER teams, interested in similar scientific topics and societal challenges, to initiate in order to broaden worldwide collaboration within the network. The proposers of up to three excellent initiatives will be offered travel grants to participate in the ILTER Open Science Meeting.
Eligibility criteria:
- The application has to be submitted by team members representing at least three LTER networks demonstrating wide geographic coverage within the ILTER network.
- Applicants should be LTER researchers (participation of early-career scholars and postgraduate researchers is highly encouraged), although the idea to be proposed may involve LTER stakeholders and partners.
- Topics addressed should be related to emerging issues and challenges for socio-ecosystem research at a global scale. Leading themes of the Open Science Meeting (see below) could be used as orientation for new R&D initiative topics.
- The proposed activity has to demonstrate a high potential for application and for broad involvement of LTER researchers.

Fill in the first-stage application form in English, and send it by email in PDF format to Margarida Santos-Reis (mmreis@fc.ul.pt) and to the ILTER secretary Haubold Herbert (Herbert.Haubold@umweltbundesamt.at). Incomplete or late submissions will not be considered.

Call for South African students
Building your career in ecosystems and socio-ecological research? This one's for you!
Eligibility: Full-time students registered at a South African university and bona fide postdoctoral researchers whose abstracts were accepted by the ILTER Science Committee (please submit via the conference website, deadline 15 March 2016).
Application process: Once you have received notification that your abstract was accepted, please provide the details and your supervisor's support letter to eva@saeon.ac.za
SAEON sponsorship: Free transport and accommodation (shared).
Supervisor/student's responsibility: Registration fee of R2 690 plus pocket money for daily breakfasts and snacks.

Experience site-based to global LTER in one conference at a world-class biodiversity destination; and take advantage of ample opportunities for networking and coordination across ecosystems. Topical research themes will be addressed in plenary, breakaway sessions and workshops.
ILTER will also use the opportunity to engage a range of powerful international partners of LTER in global change research and policy.

ILTER is a 'network of networks', a global network of research sites located in a wide array of ecosystems. ILTER's focus is on long-term, site-based research and monitoring.
ILTER’s vision is a world in which science helps prevent and solve environmental and socio-ecological problems through question and problem-driven research, designed collaborative, site-based projects, comparable data from a global network of sites and focus on global trends.
Most ILTER members are national or regional networks of scientists engaged in long-term, site-based ecological and socio-ecological research (known as LTER or LTSER). They have expertise in the collection, management and analysis of long-term environmental data. Together they are responsible for creating and maintaining a large number of unique long-term datasets.
