What’s new at SAEON?

A research article co-authored by Dr Joh Henschel, Manager of SAEON’s Arid Lands Node (pictured) was published in PLOS ONE, a peer-reviewed, open access scientific journal published by the Public Library of Science (PLOS). The article details research into the specific microbial communities associated with the rhizosphere of Welwitschia mirabilis, a living fossil. Dr Henschel was involved in the fieldwork component of the project. |

A paper by SAEON’s Chief Research Scientist, Prof. William Bond, was published in the journal Science in January 2016. Titled “Ancient grasslands at risk”, it illustrates how highly biodiverse tropical grasslands are at risk from forest-planting efforts. |

An article on a 40-year, long-term data set from Namaqualand, co-authored by Dr Helga van der Merwe, Research Career Award Fellow at SAEON’s Arid Lands Node (pictured), was considered for the Applied Vegetation Science Editors Awards and is mentioned in this Editorial – see highlighted section.
