SAEON eNews received a Certificate of Merit for excellence in writing, communication and design

This year SAEON eNews not only celebrated its 10th anniversary, it was also the runner-up in the "Best Electronic Newsletter" category of the 2015 South African Publication Forum Awards.

The newsletter scored a total of 87% and received a Certificate of Merit for excellence in writing, communication and design.

The judges’ comments were as follows:

Writing

Exceptionally good. Headlines such as: "Familiar ground … and exploring new grounds", "Is the well running dry?", "Masterminding the robots of the ocean" and "Miami missions" are simple but so effective. Introductions are well written and the writer knows how to make words count.

Visual

The simple but attractive layout says you know how this medium works. The many photographs showing people in action are an asset.

Content

There is a good balance between serious articles, in-depth content and something of a more general nature, such as the link to the oceans’ story. The Einstein quote is a nice touch.

General

It must be very difficult to make one’s voice heard on environmental research amid the sad bread-and-butter issues dominating reporting in the popular South African media. A publication such as SAEON eNews changes one’s perceptions about the "bad news". There are still people who care. And SAEON certainly does. This is a people-friendly electronic newsletter about a difficult subject.

You portray environmental science in a user-friendly manner. You understand the medium and make full use of its potential. Indeed a successful e-publication. Well done!

Anniversary celebrations

At a special event to celebrate the newsletter’s 10th anniversary and award, SAEON MD Johan Pauw informed guests that "the list of professional awards and readers’ kudos for SAEON’s e-newsletter keeps growing".

"The first SAEON eNews saw the light in 2005 when it was still the norm to produce print newsletters," he said. "Our electronic newsletter proved to be a systematic and cost-effective way of keeping our stakeholders informed without creating information overflow. Ten years later our newsletter reached the runner-up position in the electronic newsletter category of the SA Publication Forum Awards; despite the formidable communication budgets of our competitors in the corporate world!" We look forward to receiving your feedback.
